Like the name seems to suggest, a planet is in opp Like the name seems to suggest, a planet is in opposition when it is opposite, or across from something; in this case that something is the Sun.

With Jupiter and the Sun sitting with Earth in between them we are at our closest to our solar system’s largest planet, and it will look its biggest and brightest for the year with the Sun’s light lighting it up so directly. This is a great time to get outside and look at Jupiter! With a telescope or good binoculars you can even look for the four largest of its 95 moons—we can see them from a backyard telescope, but there are also craft like NASA’s Europa Clipper and the ESA’s JUICE on their way to take a closer look at these fascinating places; they should arrive in around 5-6 years.

It is across the Earth from the Sun so when the Sun sets in the West at 4:41 PM over Schenectady that is when Jupiter will rise in the East. That means the big, bright, steady light in the East should be visible for your stargazing hours as it gets darker. It is beautiful to our eyes, but with a telescope or binoculars this would be the best time of the year to look for features like the Great Red Spot or the moons in orbit around Jupiter.
