❄️🧊You don’t need me or the moon to tell you that Schenectady is getting pretty chilly, but the December moon’s names show how much it was a focus for native peoples in our area. Cold moon (Mohawk, Celtic), Long night moon (Mohican), and Moon before Yule (Celtic) are all names that celebrate what people then and now might be focused on. �

The cold weather, the upcoming longest night of the year with the Winter Solstice are definitely noticeable. The coming Yule celebrations would bring the celebration of a turning of the light, with days getting longer after the solstice. And this year the full moon brings its own extra light—our last SUPER moon of the year! That means the moon looks brighter and slightly bigger than usual because it’s closer to Earth than average. �

�December’s moon reminds us to prepare for the cold, but always celebrate the light you find around you. Warm wishes through this cold month!⛄️
