Ready to shine on, you crazy diamonds? Tomorrow's Ready to shine on, you crazy diamonds? Tomorrow's Rockin' the Dome features Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, but those aren't the only diamonds at miSci: the world's first artificial diamonds were made right in our backyard!

GE scientists wanted to find a way around the difficult natural production process, and so they built an amazing piece of tech to do it- The press they built could create pressures so high, it was like being buried 150 miles below the surface of the Earth! This photo from our archives shows James Cheney and Herb Strong working with the press.

This week in miSky:

🌕Full Moon 9/07/25

👑🌟Corona Borealis, or the Northern Crown, is not a constellation that people seek out for its brightness. A semi-circle of 7 stars between the tail of the Big Dipper and the Summer Triangle, in mythology was the crown the Princess Ariadne placed in the sky. The god Dionysus gave it to her to honor her courage and his love for her.

Just off the bottom left of the crown is more excitement hiding unseen—a binary star system which should be giving us a ‘New Star’, or Nova for a week. It is impossible to predict exactly when it will happen, but astronomers have been watching and waiting for over a year. When the nova happens, it will be as bright as the North Star—so find the constellation now so you can see the difference!

Today in miSky! 🌽🌕🌽September’s Corn mo Today in miSky!

🌽🌕🌽September’s Corn moon isn’t one we hear about too often!
September and October can both host the Harvest Moon- the full moon that falls the closest to the Autumn Equinox; and while that is often in September, this year it is celebrated on October 6. This month’s moon-nickname comes from the huge harvest of corn but there are Old English names that get a little more diverse, such as: the Song Moon, Barley Moon or the Wine Moon.

Tonight’s Full Moon is also a Full Lunar Eclipse as well—but we won’t be seeing it in Schenectady, or across America at all. Happy eclipse-gazing for those in Europe, Africa, Asia and more!
