In the province of Jeju, South Korea, the Haenyeo In the province of Jeju, South Korea, the Haenyeo are female divers that harvest sea life such as mollusks and seaweed. These women today are descendants of a long line of divers. The tradition dates all the way back to 434 AD. This has caused genetic evolutions, such as increased tolerance to cold temperatures and a protective gene for blood pressure. Diving normally increases blood pressure, but scientists believe that Jeju's exceptionally low stroke mortality rate is related to this gene.

Haenyeo begin diving as young as 11, and continue until they no longer can, which is about 80 years old. Even through pregnancy and a few days after the baby's birth! The waters they regularly dive in are at most 50 degrees on the surface.

🌗Third quarter 5/20 ✨We’re continuing on o 🌗Third quarter 5/20

✨We’re continuing on our quest for bright stars this week! Last week, we used the Big Dipper to find reddish Arcturus. Now that we’ve ‘Arced to Arcturus’ we next ’Spike down to Spica’.

Spica is the brightest star in the constellation Virgo, but you won’t easily pick out the rest of the goddess around Spica as it’s very dim. This is another colorful bright star to see—as a blue-white giant star, Spica will appear an icy-blue in our skies. This shows that it is a particularly hot star, where red Arcturus was on the cooler side, or, cooler for an immensely hot star anyway!
