This new moon has the added title of a seasonal “Black Moon”— the third new moon to come in one season. The moon's current position between the Earth and Sun, showing us it's dark side, makes this the perfect time to stargaze!

💫View the tail end of the Perseids Meteor Shower! Many stop looking for the bright shooting stars after the night of peak activity (8/12-8/13 this year), but we are still hurtling through what once was the path of the Swift-Tuttle Comet, which last passed us by in 1992. This shower doesn’t officially end until approximately the 24th of this August, so keep looking up in the late evenings to see those shooting stars!

On Earth, the fastest recorded person in a land ve On Earth, the fastest recorded person in a land vehicle (at time of writing) traveled at more than 760 miles per hour. On the Moon the fastest recorded speed is... 11 miles per hour!

The lunar rovers carried on Apollo 15 through 17 were designed to travel at 8 mph. It's unlikely that the lunar record will be broken any time soon- vehicles here on Earth have trouble staying on the ground at high speeds, and the Moon's lighter gravity would make that an even bigger challenge!

It's a blast from our science past! Ever wonder wh It's a blast from our science past! Ever wonder what it takes to broadcast radio for hundreds of miles around? About 100 years ago the equipment in this room was used to transmit AM radio. Check out the rack of vacuum tubes in the back, and the barrel sized transformers in front- all to send out news, music, and more to anyone with a receiver. 📻
