Earth's rotation has been moving faster than usual Earth's rotation has been moving faster than usual this summer, making our days shorter than 24 hours! But don't worry; the fluctuation of Earth's rotation speed is not a new thing.

While the Earth naturally spins faster during the summertime, factors such as the moon's gravitational pull and movement of the Earth's liquid core, which is affected by seasonal changes of the atmosphere, can cause our planet to move quicker.

The shortest day this year was July 10th, by 1.36 milliseconds. Today will also be shorter by 1.34 milliseconds as well as August 5th by 1.25 milliseconds!

🌑New Moon 7/24/2025 🌕🧑‍🚀 Happy Inte 🌑New Moon 7/24/2025

🌕🧑‍🚀 Happy International Moon Day! On July 20, 1969, mankind set foot on the moon for the first time. With the experience of the first moon walkers and the hundreds of lunar samples brought back to Earth, the mission led to many scientific breakthroughs!

Apollo’s goal inspired incredible advances in technology, rocketry, telecommunications and more—all in support of getting an American to the moon. The excitement of space travel can bring out the best and most cooperative sides of us—keep an eye on the Artemis program, NASA’s current plan for lunar travel, and see what other amazing things happen from this go-around of getting people safely to the moon!

(P.S. We’re proud that Artemis II crew commander, Reid Wiseman, has some Capital Region ties—he graduated from RPI! Check out @astro_reid for a look at astronaut training!)
