Uranus already had 28 moons, but NASA recently rep Uranus already had 28 moons, but NASA recently reported that an additional one has been discovered! 🌕

The moon, currently being referred to as S/2025 U1, went undetected for years. The satellite being only 10 kilometers in diameter was most likely missed by telescopes (such as the Voyager 2 during its flyby 40 years ago), due to its small size. Researchers say the moon's circular orbit tells us that it may formed nearby the planet.

Although this is just an additional moon to the many others of Uranus, this is an important scientific discovery! The ice giant's other moons are named after characters of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope, so we can figure that this moon will follow suit.

This new moon has the added title of a seasonal “Black Moon”— the third new moon to come in one season. The moon's current position between the Earth and Sun, showing us it's dark side, makes this the perfect time to stargaze!

💫View the tail end of the Perseids Meteor Shower! Many stop looking for the bright shooting stars after the night of peak activity (8/12-8/13 this year), but we are still hurtling through what once was the path of the Swift-Tuttle Comet, which last passed us by in 1992. This shower doesn’t officially end until approximately the 24th of this August, so keep looking up in the late evenings to see those shooting stars!
