This week in miSky! 🌗Last Quarter Moon on 9/14 This week in miSky!

🌗Last Quarter Moon on 9/14/25

🌌Fun fact: there are a very limited number of things that we humans can see that are outside of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. But one of the things that we CAN see is rising up into our fall sky: the Andromeda galaxy.

The Andromeda galaxy, also called M31, sits in the constellation Andromeda and you can find it using the Great Square of Pegasus. It is a barred spiral galaxy, about the same size as the Milky Way. In dark skies you can see it as a faint glow, almost a smudge of light on the sky.

Ready to shine on, you crazy diamonds? Tomorrow's Ready to shine on, you crazy diamonds? Tomorrow's Rockin' the Dome features Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, but those aren't the only diamonds at miSci: the world's first artificial diamonds were made right in our backyard!

GE scientists wanted to find a way around the difficult natural production process, and so they built an amazing piece of tech to do it- The press they built could create pressures so high, it was like being buried 150 miles below the surface of the Earth! This photo from our archives shows James Cheney and Herb Strong working with the press.
