Diamonds aren’t just used for jewelry; their natural hardness makes them ideal for cutting other materials. By using large presses to generate extreme pressures the GE team was able to grow diamonds suitable for industrial use. Further work would make gem-quality artificial diamonds a reality about fifteen years later.
