When rubber ran short in the 1930s and 40s chemical engineers looked for an artificial replacement. One of their experiments became silicone rubber, which was a surprise hit with scientists and kids. New Haven, CT toy marketer Peter Hodgson started branding the material as Silly Putty in 1950.
