SUMMER HANDS-ON STEM CLASSES

Half-day workshops on Thursday, July 6th and Friday, July 7th - $25/student/class.
Week-long classes for students entering first through eight grades. July 10th - September 1st. Classes run 9 am - 4 pm and cost $220/student/class. Space Academy Classes with Challenger Learning Center Missions cost $250/student per class. Already participated in a mission? Not a problem - students will be placed in new crew positions for entirely new mission experiences. 

Before and aftercare is available for $35/student/week. Pre-registration is required.

Limited scholarships may be available.

Thursday, July 6th - Half-day workshops

Robots! 9am-12pm/ Morning / 1st-2nd
Explore the technology and real world of robots.

Hidden Power 1pm-4pm / Afternoon / 1st-2nd
These activities highlight concepts of energy, electricity generation, and efficiency. Find out about renewable energy and discover how energy is harnessed from nature! Learn about tidal energy and biofuel.

Hidden Power 9am-12pm/ Morning / 3rd-5th
These activities raise awareness of energy materials and their applications and build understanding of the invisible forces at work. Find out about renewable energy and discover how energy is harnessed from nature! Learn about tidal energy and biofuel.

Synthetic Biology 1pm-4pm / Afternoon / 3rd-5th
Design a “super organism” to solve a problem, extract DNA from wheat germ, and discuss which future technologies you would support. Discover how synthetic biology is interconnected with our society.

Friday, July 7th

Sun Power 9am-12pm/ Morning / 1st-2nd
Students will explore the energy produced by the sun and how plants, animals and humans on Earth use this energy in life.

Wind Energy 1pm-4pm / Afternoon / 1st-2nd
Discover how power is harnessed from wind. Learn about the evolution of wind energy from windmills to turbines.

Solar Energy 9am-12pm/ Morning / 3rd -5th
Students will explore why the sun shines, the type of energy it emits and how humans on Earth can harness this solar energy.

Inside Robots - 1st-2nd grade
What is a robot? What makes them work? Connect Little Bits to learn about the inner workings and connections in robots. Discover the many kinds of robots there are in the world and uncover the creative tinkerer in you!

LEGO Robotics Level 1 - 3rd-5th grade
Build and program cool robots with LEGO’s Mindstorms EV 3 kits as you work in a team. Learn about coding through Little Bits, Minecraft Hour of Code, and Makey Makeys. No experience necessary.

July 24th - July 28th - Bioluminescence Week

Glow World Glow - 1st - 2nd grade
Explore the glowing world of bioluminescence and more! Use chemistry to create glowing worms. Discover why stars shine and how some rocks glow!

Bioluminescence - 3rd - 5th grade
Discover magnificent glowing creatures from the deepest depths of the ocean and forests from around the world. Experiment with glow-in-the-dark slime. Learn what it means to be fluorescent, chemiluminescent, and phosphorescent.

LEGO Robotics Level 2 - 3rd - 5th grade
Continue to build on your knowledge of coding LEGO Mindstorms EV3 bricks. Build and program cool robots to perform advanced tasks. Learn about coding and robotics with Little Bits, Scratch, and Makey Makeys. Experience with LEGO Robotics required.

July 31st - August 4th - Space Mission Week

Space Academy: Crater Kids - 1st - 2nd grade
Embark on a journey of a lifetime! Students will prepare for a trip to the moon by learning about and building rockets, travel to the moon. Once there, complete mission critical experiments before traveling back to Earth. End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center.

Space Academy: Explore Earth - 3rd - 5th grade
Study our home planet from space! Explore interactive hands - on activities related to space exploration, geology, and the solar system.  Activities include exploring Earth’s distance from other planets and comparing geological characteristic on Earth to other planets. End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center. *Mission – Exploration Station

LEGO Robotics - 6th - 8th grade
Build and program a robot using LEGO’s Mindstorms EV 3 kits to perform various tasks. Students will be grouped based on experience. No experience necessary. Learn about coding and robotics with Little Bits, Scratch, Minecraft Hour of Code, and Makey Makeys.

August 7th - August 11th - Working Robots Week

Robots @ Work - 1st - 2nd grade
Discover the inner working of robot jobs! Explore the technology and real world of robots. See a 3D printer in action and learn about the new jobs 3D printer do. Use a Makey Makey to play the piano with a banana.

Mars Explorers wanted! Do you have what it takes to tackle the final frontier. Be a part an effort to discover life on Mars. Solve problems on Mars just like Mark Watney in The Martian. End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center.

August 14th - August 18th - Celestial Objects Week

Bubbleology - 1st - 2nd
Create art with bubbles and discover the secret to how to make huge bubbles! Discover why bubbles are rainbow colored. Learn about the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st!

Space Academy: Comet Mystery - 3rd - 5th
Explore interactive activities related to astronomy and space exploration with a focus on some of the smaller bodies in our solar system- COMETS. Learn about the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st! End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center.

Space Academy: Our Spot in the Universe - 6th-8th
Students will learn about planets, stars and galaxies and how our Earth fits into the Universe. We will explore scale models of the solar system and galaxy, learn how astronomers use telescopes to study objects in space, and investigate other Earth-like planets beyond the solar system. Learn about the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st! End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center.
*Mission- Rendezvous with a Comet

August 21st - August 25th - Rockets Week!

Space Academy: Crater Kids - 1st - 2nd grade

Build and launch and rockets! This class provides a week-long exploration of interactive, hands on activities related to space flight, aeronautics and the physics of flight. Safely view the solar eclipse happening on Monday with solar glasses! End the week with a mission in the Challenger Learning Center

August 28th - September 1st - Chemistry Week

Potion Commotion - 1st - 2nd grade
Use chemistry to create potions that bubble, glimmer, and pop. Learn about chemical reactions by mixing, stirring, and measuring your own concoctions.

CSI Crime Lab Chemistry - 3rd - 5th grade
Put your detective skills to work to solve a crime, complete a scavenger hunt, and use forensic science! Investigate the technology of forensic science with fingerprinting, chromatography, DNA, and code breaking!
